Workshop for Counsellors and Professionals Supporting Adults with Neurodegenerative Diseases (e.g., Parkinson’s) and Co-Occurring Neuropsychiatric Symptoms
Dates: Saturday, October 18th & Saturday, October 25th
CPD Points: 14
This two-day professional development workshop is designed to upskill counsellors, psychotherapists, nurses, and medical professionals in supporting individuals and families affected by neurodegenerative diseases—particularly Parkinson’s disease. With an estimated 15,000–18,000 people living with Parkinson’s in Ireland and a global figure potentially exceeding 11 million, there is a growing need for trained professionals to understand the complex emotional and psychological challenges associated with the disease.
The workshop explores neuropsychiatric symptoms such as anxiety, depression, trauma, alexithymia, and impulsive behaviours, while introducing therapeutic tools including talk-based and somatic approaches. Participants will also gain insight into medication side effects, assessments, gender differences, and the value of interdisciplinary care. A key goal is to establish a national directory of qualified mental health professionals to address Ireland’s shortage of specialists in this area.
